La Caixa has begun the rollout of its contactless ATM
network in Barcelona.

The programme,
piloted last April
is now to be expanded to cover the whole
city.

The bank will issue 1 million cards to its
customers, more than 15,000 new POS terminals and more than 500
ATMs with built-in contactless readers.

A joint statement La Caixa and Visa Europe
said the scheme aims to make Barcelona the first major European
city to use extensive contactless payment system at shops and
ATMS.

La Caixa said it is the first bank to develop
ATMs with built-in contactless readers.

The ATMs, manufactured by Fujitsu, will also
be compatible with other contactless payments such as NFC-ready
mobile phones, the bank said.
