Kofax, a software provider with over 20,000 customers, has launched a new mobile app for gift card balance inquiries based on their Mobile Capture Platform.
The mobile app allows consumers to check the balance remaining on their gift card via their smart phones, which Kofax claim to be the first of its kind.
Kofax say consumers will use the camera in their mobile devices to take a picture of the back of a gift card and send it via the cloud to Kofax’s Mobile Capture Platform.
The platform reads the picture, accesses the issuer’s database and displays the gift card’s remaining balance in "near real time", according to the company.
The company claims this is a faster and more convenient way to check gift card balances over alternative options including asking in store and entering data into an online portal.
Drew Hyatt, senior VP of mobile applications at Kofax, said: "By offering a convenient way to check balances via smartphones, retailers can now make it easier for consumers to spend gift cards.
