Norwegian biometrics firm IDEX has developed a new large area sensor to improve security and convenience for biometric cards.

The bendable sensor has an active area of 13x13mm and is based on IDEX’s off-chip technology.

It utilises the firm’s advanced application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to deliver improved biometric performance with better power efficiency.

The ASIC allows the use of the sensor in contact-based as well as dual-interface biometric cards.

The firm plans to commence sampling of the new sensor, which can be produced with existing high-volume supply chain and standard manufacturing processes, in the first half of next year.

IDEX CEO Hemant Mardia said: “We are very excited about this new large area sensor which we have designed for both contact and contactless biometric card applications because we are seeing very strong market demand for the design from payment, ID and access control customers.
