ID Tech, a US-based smart card and credit card reader manufacturer, has commenced production of a compact MSR-EMV hybrid reader, known as Augusta.

The company believes that the EMV card slot on the top of the reader will minimize the chances of accidentally leaving the card insert after completion of the transaction.

The EMV L1 certified device, which uses ID Tech’s common EMV L2 kernel, is supported by the firm’s Universal SDK.

ID Tech said that the device will support encryption of both the magnetic stripe data and the EMV data, and remote key injection.

ID Tech vice president of business development Bill Rorick said: "The release of the Augusta is a dream come true for merchants looking to move from a magnetic stripe reader to an EMV solution. It provides a fast, seamless, and extremely cost effective pathway to EMV transactions.
