Google Wallet is reported to have decided against launching a physical credit card at its I/O developer conference.

According to All Things D, the cancellation of the launch was announced in the same internal memo that included the news of vice president Osama Bedier leaving the company.

The aim of the card was to allow Google to learn more about offline consumer purchases. Google already tracks the purchases made on Google Play and Google Checkout, as well as advertiser payments.

Media reports suggest that Google chief executive Larry Page ‘killed’ the launch after being disappointed with a recent demonstration. The physical card had reportedly already been built into the update of Google Wallet with partners expecting it to be demoed at the event.

Google will still showcase updates to the Wallet at the conference, which include rewards, offers, loyalty points and the number of merchants compatible with the Wallet.

Google said they were unable to comment on rumour or speculation.
