Google has announced its decision to officially terminate its tap and pay service, Google Wallet, for third party digital purchases.

The Google Wallet API, launched in 2012, offered merchants an easier way to reach Google Wallet users and charged 5%, or 1.9% plus 30 cents, per transaction.

The move will not affect the sale of digital goods and in-app purchases on the Google Play Store and iOS devices.

Although Google will not notify the end-users, developers will need to remove client- and server-side integration code as users attempting to buy digital goods on a website using Wallet will get a 404 error message after March 2, 2015.

Google said: "After this date, buyers will no longer be charged for their subscriptions. We strongly encourage you to find a new recurring billing or subscriptions solution to continue to accept payments from your users."
