The Wall Street Journal has reported that Google is to
work with MasterCard, and Citigroup on an NFC payments application
for Android smartphones.

The publication cites anonymous sources, and MasterCard has
refused to comment on “market speculation and rumour”, but did not
go so far as to refute the story.

Ed McLaughlin, Chief Emerging Payments Officer at MasterCard
said: “What we can tell you is that we are pleased to see great
interest in NFC technology,” – it is a very high priority at
MasterCard.”

According the report, Citigroup debit and credit customers will
be able to activate a mobile-payment application on “one current
model and many coming models of Android phone” at contactless
terminals.
