FIS has launched a new payment solution designed to help merchants meet Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements.

SCA, part of the Payment Services Directive (PSD2), requires merchants to introduce two-factor authentication when purchasing online. In October, the European Banking Authority (EBA) extended the deadline for SCA to December 31 2020.

FIS’ new solution 3DS Flex promises to help e-commerce retailers tackle fraud through biometrics like face ID and fingerprint scanning. It also uses technology to exempt customers from additional authentication when the payment is considered low risk or when shopping with a trusted merchant.

Charles Damen, SVP Product Strategy, Worldpay Merchant Solutions at FIS, said: “Regardless of the SCA timeframe announced by local regulators, we are ready to help businesses become compliant and apply SCA, so they can offer an improved authentication experience and minimise unnecessary declines or abandonment.

“In an increasingly competitive ecommerce environment, it’s vital for merchants to consistently maximise payment acceptance. Being the first to offer the latest in security authentication with 3DS2.2 will allow our merchants to offer a slick, secure shopping experience to their consumers.”

The launch comes after FIS recently bought Worldpay in July 2019.

How it works

3DS is the primary mechanism used by merchants for authenticating cardholders online. In addition, most issuing banks support 3DS1 while some are beginning to adopt 3DS2.1 and the latest 2.2 protocol.

The Worldpay 3DS Flex solution supports all 3DS protocols. The aim is to provide an improved authentication experience for online shoppers while minimising declined payments and reducing shopping cart abandonment.

Furthermore, the solution automatically routes payments for merchants through the most optimal version of authentication supported by the issuing bank.

And through leveraging data, 3DS Flex can accurately verify a shopper’s identity online or on a mobile device. This can help to protect them against fraud.
