First Data has forged a partnership with technology majors Samsung and Visa to launch a new software-based solution that will enable merchants to accept payments using mobile phones without the need for any additional hardware.

Known as Software Point of Sale (SoftPOS), the solution will facilitate ease of transactions by removing allowing contactless payments on the merchant’s smartphone or tablet without any restriction on the total transaction amount.

SoftPOS is designed to operate using near-field communication (NFC) functionality embedded in a merchant’s Samsung device.

Using the solution, merchants can accept payments from contactless cards as well as NFC-enabled devices such as key fobs and wearables.

First Data, Samsung and Visa will conduct a pilot programme in Poland by the end of this year before expanding to the EMEA, APAC and other regions, gradually.

Visa will contribute its contactless capability to the solution, while Fiserv, part of Fiserv, will provide a mobile app to enable swift transactions.

SoftPOS will also feature Samsung Electronics’ multi-layered security protocols. The Korean electronics giant will also provide mobile devices to support the project.

Fiserv executive vice president and EMEA head John Gibbons said: “We are embracing a new era in payments – the mobility era. As contactless payments grow in popularity it is important that merchants are able to enable these payments on mobile devices.

“SoftPOS, has been designed to meet the current and future needs of consumers and entrepreneurs and will change the way people make daily payments, facilitating the convenient, quick, and secure processing of contactless transactions.”

The partners are presenting the SoftPOS solution at the ongoing IFA 2019 technology fair at the Messe Berlin Exhibition Grounds in Germany.
