Spree Commerce CEO Sean Schofield in a blog post confirming the deal said that that the company will remain focused on technology solutions related to e-commerce and has already started working on new products for First Data.

"We will be taking advantage of First Data’s financial and technical resources to bring the Spree technology to a worldwide audience," Schofield added.

Following the deal, Spree Commerce office in Washington, D.C. will remain open and will continue to hire aggressively.

Schofield said that First Data is fully supportive of Spree’s open source efforts, and the Spree project will remain open source.

Additionally, Spree Commerce is scaling down some of its operations including its Wombat e-commerce platform for integrating back-end systems on 31 March 2016 to focus on other strategic opportunities, according to TechCrunch.

First Data head of global business solutions Dan Charron told Digital Transactions News: "Spree will help First Data build stronger connections to the developer community and bolster our ability to deliver unrivaled e-commerce solutions to businesses around the world."
