“Security is often cited as the biggest
impediment to the broad adoption of mobile wallets, and we believe
our jointly developed NFC reference designs will give consumers
greater confidence that mobile wallets are not only an easier way
to pay but are much more secure than other means,” said Larry
Ciaccia, CEO of AuthenTec.

The first biometrically-enabled NFC mobile
payment was recently made using the technology developed by the
three companies.

The transaction was authenticated by a swipe
of a finger over the smartphone’s fingerprint sensor, matching it
with a pre-enrolled account. The credit card app on the smartphone
was then activated and the phone is tapped against the payment
terminal to complete the transaction.
