ATM companies Diebold and Wincor Nixdorf have announced the creation of an industry association that will work to improve ATM security worldwide.
The two companies hope to promoting interactive discussion in the ATM industry as well as gathering and compiling information to recognise potential attack scenarios on cash machines.
Andy Mattes, president and CEO of Diebold, said: "Today’s announcement represents the first step in an industry-wide effort intended to help ensure the ATM remains a safe, secure option for consumers to confidently conduct any financial transaction they choose – now and well into the future."
According to Retail Banking Research, the number of ATMs in the world should reach 3.7m in 2018, compared with 2.6m currently in use.
Diebold and Wincor Nixdorf said it might result in an increase of criminal activities involving the machines.
Eckard Heidloff, president & CEO of Wincor Nixdorf, said: "ATM fraud is a worldwide challenge, and with the anticipated expansion of both the ATM market and ATM-related crime, the time has come for those organizations whose business operations depend on ATMs to take concerted action at the global level."

By GlobalDataThe association intends to establish industry-wide norms for secure ATMs and ATM components. It will be open to participants such as financial institutions, IT service providers, ATM manufacturers and their suppliers.
Mattes commented: "Given the great strides our industry has made with advancements in various technologies that consumers value at the ATM, it’s time that we collectively and effectively combat the impact that technically sophisticated global crime has had on the channel."
Diebold and Wincor plan to base the association in the Netherlands.
In other ATM news, Diebold and Wincor competitor NCR has just signed a partnership with Barclays Bank of Botswana and Bytes Managed Solutions for the installation of ‘intelligent cash deposit ATMs’.
The new machines are designed for high transaction usage, accepting deposit with real time credit capability, recycling the deposited cash and dispensing it, etc.
Malebogo Sebusang, head of channels at Barclays Bank of Botswana, commented: "Working with Bytes to roll out the NCR solution gives us a significant competitive advantage as the only bank in the country offering multi-functional services through these intelligent ATMs."
