Illinois’ First American Bank is recommending that taxi fares in Chicago are paid in cash, rather than by card, due to spending patterns suggesting a computer security breach.
While it is not clear how debit and credit card details are being copied, a pattern of fraudulent spending on victims’ cards after being utilised in taxis was noticed. More than 220 cards have been cancelled as precaution and 11 debit accounts have reported fraudulent activity.
Christine Childers, First American bank spokeswoman, said: "I can’t imagine that it’s isolated to our debit cards because the breach isn’t happening here. It’s happening after the card is swiped in the payment process. Don’t use your debit cards or your credit cards. Pay cash."
The bank added: "Until the situation is rectified, we will continue to close and reissue cards that have been exposed."
The bank has asked Bank of America Merchant Services and MasterCard to stop processing card transactions for taxis until the problem is rectified.
