ANZ Bank has chosen not to proceed with
contactless in its current form following a trial with Visa,
claiming the technology did not measure up to the bank’s needs.

The bank partnered with Visa in March to pilot
contactless payments using a MicroSD card that inserted into an
NFC-enabled phone case on iPhone or Andriod handsets.

However, the MicroSD technology, developed by
DeviceFidelity, failed to deliver.

“We have found in our research that our
participants strongly supported contactless payment as a convenient
way to pay, but the MicroSD technology did not meet all of our
requirements,” ANZ Bank told ZDNet Australia.

“At this stage we will not be progressing with
MicroSD as a contactless payment technology platform but we will
continue to look for ways to support contactless payments in the
market.”

It is not all bad news. ANZ said it found the
trial “extremely useful” and has announced it is still committed to
the technology.
