Commuters in Nottingham will soon be able to download tickets to their smart transit cards via NFC devices after buying them online.

Currently most commuters buy tickets for bus, rail or tram over the counter or have to order them online and collect them several days later.

According to Ecebs, the company that delivers the smartcard technology, customers will now be able to buy tickets online using their NFC smartphones and tablets and then credit them to their card by holding it against the device.

Jason Clifford from the public transport projects team at Nottingham City Council said: "Our objective is to deliver a world-class transport ticketing network. While the network is ambitious in scale it is our firm belief that it is possible to grow the market by providing a step change in the ease of ticket purchase for both existing and new customers.

"The Citycard retail network is designed to complement the existing travel centres providing new retail channels that offer customers new and more convenient ways to purchase and crucially, collect tickets."

Eceb’s solution, dubbed Paragon Remote Ticket Download, uses cloud technology to deliver tickets straight to smartphones.
