Canadian digital currency platform Coinberry has begun talks with the City of Richmond Hill to offer a cryptocurrency payment processing solution.

On 10 July 2019, the city council decided to ink an agreement with Coinberry to provide an option for property tax payment in Bitcoin for residents and businesses.

This is Coinberry’s second municipal partnership in less than six months.

Richmond Hill Deputy Mayor Joe Di Paola said: “We believe that the demand for a digital currency payment option is only going to grow in the coming years, especially amongst millennials.

“Our Council was aware of Coinberry’s successful implementation of a digital currency payment service with the Town of Innisfil, and since there was no cost and no risk to the City of Richmond Hill to do the same, it made the decision that much easier for us.”

Municipal staff will report on the feasibility of using Coinberry for payments of other city fees and charges by 30 September 2019.

Coinberry CEO and co-founder Andrei Poliakov said: “Leaders of government and enterprise organisations are realising that, with the right partners, they can innovate with blockchain and digital currencies.

“We’re pleased to be working on additional innovative solutions with leading enterprise and municipal partners, and have a number of very exciting initiatives we will be announcing over the next several months.”

In the event of the talks being successful, the City of Richmond Hill’s city manager will sign a contract with Coinberry.

The alliance also enables the city to use Coinberry’s technology for other blockchain and digital currency payments and services.

Based in Toronto, Coinberry operates the Coinberry.com cryptocurrency trading platform. The platform enables members to buy, sell, and process payments made with cryptocurrencies in Canada.
