Coinbase, a virtual currency exchange and wallet operator, has partnered with startup Shift Payments to introduce the first US-issued bitcoin debit card.

The new offering, dubbed the Shift Card, is a VISA debit card that will enable Coinbase users in 24 states across the US to spend bitcoin online and offline at over 38 million merchants across the globe.

Users can receive the new card by connecting their Coinbase account, as well as ordering the card by offering their physical address and authorizing the $10 issuance fee.

The card will not charge any fees associated with domestic merchant transactions beyond the one-time $10 issuance fee for a limited period.

The company may eventually charge a fee to Shift for the conversion of bitcoin.
