CitizenCard has launched a card in the UK that combines photo
ID, proof of age and a prepaid Visa card.

Not-for-profit CitizenCard says the card is
designed for 12 years old and above and aims to act as a proof of
age mechanism for access age-restricted goods and services both
online and at the physical point of sale.

“The prepaid market a while ago was not
flexible enough to implement our idea, and it took us a long time
to find the right programme manager and the right printer who could
understand all requirements. A number of factors came together and
today we are able to present this innovative product,” said
CitizenCard chief executive Andrew Chevis.

CitizenCards says this chip and PIN card is
the first product of its kind. It carries the Government PASS mark
(proof of age standard scheme) recognised as valid ID by the Home
Office, the Scottish Government, the Police and Trading Standards
and is approved by Visa.

CitizenCard is set to publicise the card in
schools as well of launching the card ahead of the Olympics to make
the most of the influx of people attending the London event, where
only Visa payments will be accepted.

The Visa Prepaid CitizenCard costs a one-off
application fee of £15 for delivery within one month or £30 for
delivery within one week. Cardholders can also
earn rewards by promoting it to friends and family.

National Federation of Retail Newsagents
(NFRN) chief executive Paul Baxter said “NFRN believes the Visa
Prepaid CitizenCard is a huge step forward for PASS Proof of
Age.  The Visa logo and hologram will add to the acceptance of
the card as valid ID and the clear distinction between 12-15, 16-17
and 18+ cards will help our members to comply with the
ever-stringent laws on underage sales”.
