Chase has restricted around 2m debit cards after a data breach at US retail chain Target compromised card details of around 40m shoppers.
On 21 December, the bank told affected cardholders that cash withdrawals would be limited to $100 and card purchases to $300 daily, but that Chase credit cards would be unaffected.
Meanwhile, Senator Charles Schumer called for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to investigate the card breach, saying: "Not only do the American people have the right to know how this happened, but revealing the information would allow other stores to learn from this experience."
A spokesperson for Chase said that less than 10% of customers were affected and Target has said that it has heard of few cases of fraud since the breach.
Nonetheless, it is understood that the attorney generals of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and South Dakota have asked Target for further information about the security lapse.
