Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has introduced Alipay app in its Albert touchscreen devices.

Following the launch, all CBA customers can utilise the app through the Albert touchscreen device for in-store payments. Currently, there are 94,000 Albert devices active in Australia.

CBA is the first major Australian bank to introduce Alipay in Australia.

CBA executive general manager of business customer solutions Clive Van Horen said: “This is a game changer and we are thrilled to be the first major bank to provide Alipay as a payment option for customers, through our market leading and innovative apps ecosystem, Albert App Bank.”

Alipay is a mobile and online payment platform operated by China’s Ant Financial Services Group.

The payment app will enable local businesses to create a payment channel for the Chinese consumers thereby improving the point-of-sale experience.

The local Australian businesses can accept Alipay on their Albert device by downloading ePay app, an existing CBA app provider.

ePay will also enable the businesses to conduct location-based promotional campaigns to Alipay wallet users.

Australia is one of the most popular tourist destinations for Chinese people with 1.4 million visiting last year.

Alipay country manager for Australia and New Zealand George Lawson said: “Australian businesses have been calling out for their banks to partner with Alipay to improve their exposure to the rapidly expanding Chinese visitor market.

“We are thrilled to partner with CBA to help drive Alipay acceptance in the Australian market so that Chinese customers can use a payment method that’s familiar to them.”
