Barclays and Barclaycard are expecting contactless payment transactions to reach 90 million in 2014, as more Brits opt to use contactless three times more than in 2012.
Having launched the contactless cards in March 2009, currently there are nearly nine million Barclays contactless debit cards and 9.5 million contactless Barclaycards in wallets across the UK.
In 2013, around 45 million contact transactions were made by customers generating over £300m, compared to 15 million transactions in 2012 at a value of £100m. However in 2014, the number is expected to rise by 93% to reach £580m.
Additionally, many contactless terminals were installed across the UK, which aided in rise.
Barclays UK Retail Bank managing director, Catherine McGrath, said with over 18 million Barclays and Barclaycard branded contactless cards in the UK, they are well and truly becoming a nation that is embracing contactless technology as it becomes increasingly accessible.
"As the first bank in the UK to launch contactless cards, Barclays strives to be at the forefront of this technology and we are constantly looking for new ways to improve and innovate our contactless offerings to give our customers the most secure and very best service possible," McGrath added.
