Around 37% of Nigerians have been found to be unaware of mobile money transfer services and also do not use the payment platform, according to a report by Nigerian business and management consulting firm Philip Consulting.

According to the report, the remaining 63% of the respondents were aware of mobile money, of which 31% were aged between 26 and 35 years, 15% were from 36 to 45 years, 10% between 18 and 25 years, 5% between 46 and 55 years and 1% each for the under 18 and over 55 years age group.

The report showed that 25% of those who knew about mobile money earned less than NGN50000 ($315) monthly while 14% earn between NGN50001 ($315.16) and NGN100000 ($630.3).

Though most of the respondents know about mobile money services, only few of them adopt its services because many of them are not registered and do not use the service.

The report was quoted by This Day as saying, "The major reason given for this is insufficient information on mobile money services.

"A minority (17 per cent) of the respondents indicated that they are aware but unregistered because they do not need the service; therefore, it is fair to conclude that 83 per cent of those who know about mobile money would use the service if the problem of lack of information was resolved."
