American Express (AmEx) is partnering with mobile-check out
service provider Foursquare to offer location-based advertising and
offers to UK card holders.

The service is already up-and-running in the US under the AmEx
Smart Offer API since July last year.

Among AmEx’s the UK merchant partners are supermarket chain
Tesco, high street clothes retailer House of Fraser. Nando’s, a
popular restaurant chain with youngsters, and cut-price clothes
retailer store Primark are also included in the mobile advertising
campaign. Others restaurant chains participating in the scheme
include Bella Italia, Café Rouge, Eat, PizzaExpress and Strada.

Consumers will need to download the Foursquare app and will
receive offers, called American Express Specials, whenever they are
near to any of the partner merchant stores.

Discounts will be applied when a consumer uses the Foursquare
app to “check in” for a particular deal. They will not be required
to show the digital voucher at the POS as details will be saved and
linked to their AmEx card.
