Alipay, a Chinese payments platform operated by Ant Financial Services Group, has forged a partnership with Motion Pay to make inroads into Canada.

The partnership with Canadian payments firm Motion Pay will allow Chinese consumers to use Alipay at point-of-sale with Motion Pay merchants.

Through the alliance, Alipay aims to expand its reach in all major Canadian cities including Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, and Banff. The digital payment service will be accepted across different retail categories such as restaurants, hospitality, retail and luxury.

Alipay president of Americas Souheil Badran said: “As our first Canadian partner, Motion Pay has helped us to reach critical mass in acceptance points across Canada.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship and enabling even more Canadian brands and retailers to connect with the growing number of Chinese consumers seeking items they can’t find at home, and simplifying payments by offering Alipay’s familiar method.”
