Ahlibank’s Al Hilal Islamic Banking Services has become one of the first Islamic banks in Oman to introduce a chip-based debit card for its customers.
The newly introduced Sharia-compliant debit card will be accepted worldwide for cash withdrawals as well as at merchant outlets.
The Al Hilal debit card has been developed in strict accordance with the values of the Islamic faith, the bank said.
According to the Al Hilal website, the card can’t be used for any activities that aren’t in compliance with Sharia law. For instance, cardholders are not permitted to buy pork, alcohol, or pornographic materials, while the bank isn’t allowed to earn interest on the card account.
"Al Hilal Islamic Banking Services is the first Islamic banking window in Oman to go live with the debit card with full service and transactional facilities for our esteemed customers. The Al Hilal debit card can be used by customers for their transactions/ cash withdrawals on Omannet, GCC net and the Visa networks. Our customers can use any ATM machine in the sultanate without any charge or fees," said Abdullah al Jabri, head of Al Hilal Islamic Banking.
Al Jabri added that Al Hilal Islamic Banking Services will be introducing various new initiatives to ensure the continued momentum of Islamic banking in the Sultanate, while working for a high level of customer satisfaction.
