DIY and household goods retailer, Wilkinson
has a weekly shopper count of four million.

The contactless payments technology allows
customers to pay for goods valued less than £15, alleviating the
use of a PIN. This benefits shoppers by reducing queue
lengths, which, as reported by a BarclayCard study, are claimed to
cause 51% of shoppers to simply not enter the store if too
long.

“The sheer quantity of transactions made
across the UK at Wilkinson stores will have a major impact on the
progression of contactless payments and by 2012 we expect
contactless to be a mainstream payment technology,” said Richard
Armstrong, head of UK payment acceptance at Barclaycard.

“A growing number of the 11.4m contactless
Barclays debit card and Barclaycard-holders are using the
technology to end the scrabble for change in their pocket, helping
reduce the number of abandoned purchases for retailers.”
