The Gemalto Santander solution that combines the EMV security with the contactless transactions using MasterCard PayPass features has achieved the largest deployment of its kind in South America.
The multi-application card allows students to access their bank accounts and make low-value purchases by waving their card in front of a contactless reader and also avail discounts at participating bookstores, restaurants and study centres.
MasterCard Brazil products vice president Marcelo Tangioni said: "University Smart Card is an important tool for financial inclusion for young people, as well as a technology enabler to academic activities."
