Groupon has entered into the m-payments market
launching a service that allows businesses in the US to accept
credit cards using an iPhone or an iPod touch.
The system is built into the latest version of
the Groupon Merchants app for the iPhone and iPod Touch and is
aimed to restaurants, salons and spas, retail establishments and
other businesses.
Groupon says it offers the lowest rates in the
market.
For each transaction swiped with a MasterCard,
Visa or Discover, Groupon will charge a 1.8 percent fee plus USD15
cents per transaction.
An American Express card will be charged a 3
percent fee plus USD15 cents.
Mobile payments company Square charges 2.75% per swipe.

Merchants can use the app to scan and redeem
Groupons and monitor additional spend over the value of the
Groupon.
The service is also available as a pilot to
non-Groupon merchants at the rate of 2.2% (3% American Express)
plus USD 15 cents per transaction.
