Barclays’ mobile payment service Pingit, which
was launched in February, is now available to all UK bank account
holders.
At the launch of the service, Pingit was only
available for Barclays customers, but in March the bank had said
that it would expand the service to all bank accounts.
Now, one month behind schedule, Barclays has
opened up Pingit for all UK account holders, enabling those who
download the app to send money using just the recipient’s phone
number without sharing account details.
The Pingit app is available on the Android
platform, as well as the Apple and Blackberry operating systems.
Only smartphone users can both send and receive money.
Those account holders with a traditional
mobile phone can just receive remittances once they are registered
with Pingit.
While Barclays’ customers will receive mobile
payments directly into their accounts, other UK account holders
will have to use an electronic wallet that Barclays will set up for
this purpose.

By GlobalDataThe wallet, available from today, has a limit
of £2,000 for security reasons, a Barclays spokesperson told
Cards International.
The withdrawal of funds from the wallet to the
bank account is free of charges for individuals.
The editorial team of Cards
International has tested the service and found that customers
will have to find a branch which offers “account verification
services” and physically go there, taking with them:
-Photo ID: such as a passport, driving license
or national ID card and
-Paper bank statement: one that has not been
“internet generated showing your current address” and “not less
than 3 months old”.
The Pingit app has been downloaded 400,000
times already and in February, shortly after the launch, became the
number one financial app in the UK Apple Store, according to
Barclays.
Baraclays is working now to expand Pingit to
money transfers abroad.
