PayPal has teamed up with Brazilian mobile phone service provider VIVO to allow consumers in the country to conduct m-payments for airtime, goods and services.

Announcing the deal on PayPal’s blog, PayPal Brazil general manager Mario Mello said the new technology will be available for all VIVO subscribers who own GSM handsets. Mello claims there is no new software or application needed to conduct m-payments thus theoretically anyone on the GSM network who has a mobile phone can use this service.

“We’re thrilled about this announcement, as well as the future of m-commerce in Brazil,” said Mello.

“You can expect more collaboration from PayPal and VIVO in the next year, so stay tuned.”

PayPal claims the agreement will allow Brazilian customers to shop on their mobile and complete their purchases at over 8m of PayPal’s merchants across the globe.
