A mobile app for passengers to pay taxi fares has been introduced in New York cabs.

Developed by payments provider VeriFone, Way2Ride lets passengers ride without a wallet by storing payment details and preferred tip amounts.

Once inside the cab, customers can pay any time using their smartphone. Digital receipts are stored in the app and online.

"Way2ride makes every taxi ride better, whether you hail by hand or with an app," said VeriFone’s Amos Tamam.

Tamam, who oversaw the Way2Ride launch, said "an app that provides this convenience in every taxi in New York City will be a real benefit to passengers and drivers alike."

The app uses VeriFone’s ‘Zoosh’ technology, which uses location tracking to check passengers into their ride and securely transmit payment information in the cloud.

This is VeriFone’s first commercial deployment of Zoosh technology, which uses the speakers and microphones of smartphones to securely exchange data between devices.

Way2ride is built on VeriFone’s open Application Programming Interface (API) cloud platform, a source for developers to create apps with secure payments on VeriFone’s secure mobile commerce network.

After the New York launch, VeriFone aims to expand Way2ride globally through its network of 70,000 payment-enabled taxis.
