Experience unmatched clarity with a single platform that combines unique data, AI, and human expertise.
The goal is to support trusted transactions as AI agents initiate and manage purchases and payments for consumers and businesses.
Under the partnership, Visa’s payment capabilities will be integrated into OpenAI experiences, such as ChatGPT. This will give developers and merchants a streamlined way to accept Visa payments initiated by agents.
Visa will also provide the network connectivity, tokenisation and risk tools that underpin transaction processing and security.
Payments will operate within defined user permissions, policies and controls. These can include spending limits, merchant category restrictions and approval requirements.
Transactions will use tokenised Visa credentials, with real-time authorisation and fraud monitoring.
The card giant said the collaboration forms part of its Visa Intelligent Commerce initiative, which is focused on extending secure payment capabilities into new digital environments.
Visa and OpenAI also plan to explore enterprise applications. These include developer-oriented experiences powered by Codex and more automated, conversational workflows.
Visa chief product and strategy officer Jack Forestell said: “AI will transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology ever did.
“As AI agents become active participants in the economy, Visa’s focus is to ensure transactions are trusted, secure and seamless. That’s the infrastructure we’re building with partners like OpenAI.”
OpenAI Commerce Partnerships head Marco Mahrus said: “Commerce is going to happen in many more places and in many more ways than it does today, and agents will play an increasingly important role in helping people complete tasks that involve money—from purchases and payments to more complex transactions.
“By integrating with Visa Intelligent Commerce, we’re building the infrastructure for secure, transparent, and user-controlled agentic transactions, helping people do more with AI agents while maintaining confidence that payments are being handled safely and securely.”
