EMVCo has announced new efforts to address agentic payments interoperability, aimed at supporting innovation in agentic payment solutions and improving secure, seamless card-based transactions globally.
EMVCo noted that agentic commerce, which allows artificial intelligence (AI) agents to act on behalf of consumers, is quickly transforming the shopping experience.

Experience unmatched clarity with a single platform that combines unique data, AI, and human expertise.
According to EMVCo, agentic payments introduce AI agents as new participants that can initiate transactions with merchants without the consumer’s direct involvement.
This approach could increase personalisation and convenience. However, it also brings unique challenges regarding transaction initiation, authentication, and security.
EMVCo said that with the rapid pace of industry adoption and innovation, establishing a scalable and globally interoperable approach could help enable trusted agentic payments for issuers, merchants, and consumers.
The organisation is currently examining the way by which EMV Specifications—such as EMV 3-D Secure (3DS), EMV Secure Remote Commerce (SRC), and EMV Payment Tokenisation—can be developed and improved for promoting card-based agentic payments securely.

EMVCo executive committee chair Patrik Smets said: “EMVCo developed the global specifications that enable trusted card-based payments for billions of consumers and businesses worldwide.
“There is now a clear opportunity to collaborate with participants across the industry to extend this experience to support agentic payment solutions.”
In September 2025, a joint initiative was announced by EMVCo and CharIN e.V. to promote interoperable payment solutions for electric vehicle (EV) charging.
This project aims to align EMV-based open payments with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge systems, facilitating a secure payment experience throughout the global EV charging ecosystem.
