Samsung has launched a new point-of-sale (POS) system for the acceptance of contactless payments at micro-merchants and small businesses in Canada.

Canada is the first country to deploy Samsung POS, which was developed in alliance with contactless mobile card payment acceptance company Mobeewave.

The new system can be used to accept debit and credit transactions via contactless cards and mobile wallets on Samsung NFC-enabled devices.

It eliminates the need for hardware such as dongles and cables, noted Samsung.

Merchants can also use the POS to send receipts to customers through email, access real-time sales data, create staff accounts and provide sales history.

Samsung Electronics Canada director of Mobile Product Management and Strategy Steven Cull said: “There is a strong appetite in the Canadian and global market to advance mobile payment solutions for small business owners and entrepreneurs. We have Samsung Pay Digital wallet for consumers and we wanted to deliver the same level of convenience for merchants.

“With Samsung POS, vendors can receive payment on the spot, without requiring additional hardware. It’s an accessible, highly secure, low-cost and easy-to-use mobile payment acceptance solution.”

During a pilot carried out in the country over the past several months, the system was downloaded more than 10,000 times. Samsung intends to begin expanding the POS to other markets next year.

Earlier this month, Samsung partnered with Mastercard and Netspend to add a virtual prepaid cash card, called Samsung Pay Cash, to its mobile payment wallet.
