As part of the partnership, online merchants, payment service providers and acquirers will get access to the Rambus Token Gateway. Furthermore, this will allow them to securely connect to the American Express Token Service.

The gateway will also enable them to tokenise card-on-file online transactions. The initiative is expected to enhance security for transactions carried out with online merchants.

American Express vice-president of global consumer services A/NZ Robert Tedesco said: “This new partnership with Rambus will mean merchants can offer our card members even more secure payment methods at the time of checkout.

“We’ll also to be able to offer merchants access to our digital payment capabilities. These include Pay with Points and Smart Offers, to further build customer loyalty with their customers that use American Express cards.”

Rambus said that the e-commerce tokenisation alliance also increases customer convenience and enables quick-to-market time for merchants. In addition, it decreases the risk of fraud. The token replace sensitive card information like account numbers.

In addition, the Token Gateway keeps merchants informed on new card scheme tokenisation specifications. It offers a single platform to connect with all relevant token service providers.

Rambus senior vice-president of payments and ticketing said: “Fraud continues to rise for e-commerce transactions and we need to give consumers more secure payment methods without compromising usability.

“By facilitating the use of tokens online, merchants and card issuers can increase trust in transactions throughout the ecosystem to drive higher authorisation rates and improved customer conversions, resulting in greater revenues.”
