Turkish Garanti Bank and mobile phone operator
Avea have joined forces to launch the first NFC enabled SIM card
that converts existing mobile handsets to NFC technology.

The SIM card will enable users to make
payments using their mobile phones by debiting their Garanti credit
cards or by using pre-paid credit. Customers will also be able to
use their mobile phone to pay for public transport where
contactless functionality is available.

Consumers can also use the technology as
identification to gain access to buildings, as a ticket to football
games or concerts, and to pay for items at vending machines across
Turkey.

“Not only are we enabling our customers to
effortlessly conduct contactless payments by connecting their
credit or pre-paid cards or both with their mobile phones but we
are also moving closer to the aim of eliminating cash altogether by
developing innovative products and services,” said Mehmet Sezgin,
CEO at Garanti Payment Systems.

The new technology is developed in
conjunction with MasterCard and Gemalto and will be available from
July this year. The product is based on Garant’s Bonus Trink
contactless feature, which allows users to make payments of up to
TL35 ($22) using a credit card, key fob, watch or a Bonus Trink
sticker which can be attached to almost any device.

Users can convert their handset to the NFC technology by
installing the new SIM card.
