The average value of transactions on Orange
and Barclaycard’s newly launched contactless-enabled mobile phone
in the UK is already far greater than either party anticipated.

In two short weeks, Tom Gregory, head of
digital payments at Barclaycard told Cards International,
consumers are using their ‘Quick Tap’ handsets to pay for larger
basket sizes than Barclaycard initially expected.

Early usage figures have also exceeded initial
predications, with early adopters and technology enthusiasts
seemingly taking the lead in the payments revolution in a big
way.

“The figures have surprised us in a good way,”
said Gregory.

While the credit arm of UK-based Barclays has
not released any specific figures around the transaction amounts
and usage of the contactless-enabled Samsung Tocco Lite device,
these announcements go some way to showing the readiness of UK
consumers to adopt m-payments.

The war is not won yet, however, warns
Gregory. He says there is still a lot of work to do in terms of
educating consumers on the benefits of contactless technology and
claims the payment method will only take off if the industry throws
its full weight behind it.
