Germany’s rail transport company Deutsche Bahn
is set to roll out its Touch & Travel mobile ticketing
service.

Touch & Travel allows users to touch in
and out at rail stations via the ‘Touchpoints’ through the use of
near field communication (NFC) or 2D barcodes via their
smartphones. The data is transmitted over a mobile network to a
central repository. A bill is then sent to the user at the end of
every month.

The scheme is set to be initially rolled out
at 320 railway stations across Germany, which will bear the
Touchpoints.

The scheme is also to include bus journeys as
well through a joint venture with Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV),
the transport authority for Frankfurt’s bus train and underground
services.

“This service is already working and is in
test mode at he moment, in a limited area. We want to change to
fully operational mode in November as soon as we have installed
Touch & Travel Touchpoints at our stations,” said a Deutsch
Bahn spokesperson to NFC World.
