Around 28% Brits were found to be having credit card debt, the third highest after 56% Turks and 32% Romanians, according to a survey by the Dutch-owned bank ING.

The survey, which questioned 1,200 people, found that only 6% people in Netherlands and Austria had card debts.

According to ING, residents in the UK are more likely to increase spending on Christmas in 2013, compared with other European nations.

None of the British respondents showed interest in repaying the debts after Christmas, with one in four respondents from other nations had plans to repay the debts.

ING senior economist Ian Bright was quoted by The Telegraph as saying that while many people in Europe recognise the need to continue fixing their personal finances in 2014, it seems that Britons are less convinced.

"Perhaps this is because we’re more realistic about the nature of resolutions made in midst of the New Year spirit – or maybe we feel that better financial prospects await us in 2014. We’ll have to wait and see," Bright added.
