Amid rising concern over unauthorised gambling, HSBC Malta has blocked its customers from using their credit cards for online betting.

The ban is now being implemented locally and, in particular, Maltco agents have been told by the company to choose another bank, independent.com.mt has reported.

onlinecasinoarchives.com quoted HSBC group public affairs manager, David Hall, saying that the bank, has acted on legal advice but wouldn’t provide more details about the advice.

Almost one year ago, the bank has stopped authorizing gambling transactions; however, some customers were gamble online until last week.

Hall further added there was no public statement on the ban, "We did not issue a press release [on the ban]. If you have an illegal site and you put out a notice saying you won’t allow transactions involving an illegal site, it would be perverse."

The London headquartered HSBC claimed that Visa and Mastercard have supported its move.
