Cuscal has launched the first trial of a Host Card Emulation (HCE)-based mobile payment solution for Visa cardholders, in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Once commercially available, the solution will offer a greater choice of secure mobile payments to Australian customers.
With Cuscal HCE mobile payment solution, an NFC-enabled phone with the latest version of the Android KitKat operating system can be turned into a contactless payment device using Visa payWave contactless technology.
It also ensures enhanced security by saving confidential payments data in a secure cloud service to which the mobile phone connects through the cellular network.
The HCE capability is currently being tested by a pilot team of Cuscal staff cardholders. The solution is set to be available to its Australian client base by mid-2014, either as a complete client-branded mobile application, or through an application programming interface (API).
Cuscal Product & Service general manager, Adrian Lovney, said that getting payments inside phones has traditionally been difficult because of the need to coordinate multiple parties such as trusted service managers, handset manufacturers and telecommunication providers.
