Transport for London (TfL) will launch contactless payments for the customers travelling on the Tube, London Overground, DLR and Trams, in addition to buses, starting 16 September.

After launch, passengers will be able to tap their contactless AmEx, MasterCard or Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards at stations to execute payments. In addition, they can still use Oyster cards, according to TFL.

TfL noted that the launch of the contactless payment technology will reduce or make redundant the time taken to top up Oyster balances as fares will be charged directly to payment card accounts.

TfL customer experience director Shashi Verma said: "Offering the option of contactless payments will make it easier and more convenient for customers to pay for their travel, freeing them of the need to top up Oyster credit and helping them get on board without delay."

Registered customers can easily view their journey and payment history through their TfL online account. The account will also allow customers to obtain refunds on incomplete journeys.

The contactless system, which was first rolled out on London’s bus network in December 2012, has been used by approximately 825,000 customers for 17 million journeys.

The contactless payment system will also generate the best deal for customers, with daily travel caps and a "Monday to Sunday" option that calculates the best value fare over the course of a week.

The announcement follows a successful pilot of around 3,000 customers in April.
