Tencent has partnered with merchant acquirer Network International to launch WeChat Pay in the UAE.

The two entities signed an agreement to make the mobile payment service available to Network’s merchant partners in the country.

As agreed, the merchant acquirer will act as settlement partner and solution provider to enable these mobile-based transactions.

WeChat Pay comes integrated with Chinese social messaging service WeChat. The messaging service has more than one billion registered users globally.

The move will enable the local retailers and merchants to cater to the Chinese tourists. On the other hand, the Chinese customers can also make purchases in the UAE via their WeChat mobile wallet.

Network International Group Head of Product & Innovation Paul Clarke said: “We are excited to work with Tencent Holdings to offer WeChat Pay to our clients across the UAE.

“Our agreement brings an incredible opportunity to the UAE’s retail and hospitality sectors, helping them cater to the growing demand from Chinese visitors.

“As a market leader in end-to-end payment solutions, we are delighted to enable our network of merchant partners in the UAE to keep pace with new technologies, offering them a competitive edge.”

In November last year, Worldline added WeChat Pay to its payment solution in Switzerland. The integration enables Chinese visitors to pay for purchases in Swiss stores using their smartphone.
