US consumers trust
fingerprint biometrics over entering PIN numbers or signatures to
verify their identities when using a credit card, an online poll by
IT services provider Unisys has revealed.

The survey shows 63% of
respondents believe biometrics to be the safest method for credit
card verification and authentication compared to a 20% preference
for photo identification, 13% for PIN numbers and 6% for
handwritten signatures.

Unisys claims the results
indicate increasing consumer acceptance of biometric technologies
to secure financial transactions and combat identity
fraud.

“As we move to an
increasingly digital era, traditional methods of identity
verification will no longer be sufficient,” said Bryan Ichikawa,
vice-president of identity solutions at Unisys.

“[Biometric identification] could prove valuable in a variety of fields even beyond banking,
such as in health care and transportation security.”

The online survey, completed last month polled 305 US
consumers.
