Safaricom, a Kenya-based mobile network operator, has launched its M-Pesa 1TAP payment service in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nyeri after the completion of successful four-month trial.

1Tap marks an evolution of M-PESA that involves contactless technology using a card, wristband or sticker. It reduces number of steps per transaction from eight to one.

The new service will be available to all Lipa Na M-PESA merchants and customers, the company said.

The company added that the service also increases Lipa Na M-PESA’s accuracy and privacy by ensuring that payments are delivered to a matching merchant.

M-PESA 1Tap will be launched in supermarkets, petrol stations, and restaurants. The merchants where customers can now make payments with 1Tap include Shell, Naivas, Choppies, KenolKobil, KFC, Oil Libya, Total and QuickMart.

Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said: “As a trusted, easy and convenient cashless payment solution for more than 70,000 businesses in Kenya, Lipa Na M-PESA is ready to advance to become a more seamless solution. M-PESA 1Tap builds on a strong foundation built on 10 years of learning and feedback from both our customers and merchants. We hope it will transform the world of cashless payments.”
