Cardtek has teamed up with India-based private sector lender Axis Bank to roll out a national open-loop payment system – Axis Bank RuPay Contactless Transportation Card – for public transportation in India.
The Axis Bank RuPay Contactless Transportation Card was launched in Bangalore, the capital city of Indian state of Karnataka.
The new payment solution will integrate with the banking systems to offer residents the ability to pay for goods and services, including public transportation, using either account-based or card-based open loop transit transactions.
It can be used for payments of all mass transportation, including subways and bus systems, along with over 1.2 million merchant outlets across the country.
The smart bankcard can be customised with names and pictures of users and allow consumers to make transactions via the bank’s ATMs, vendors, the Internet or mobile applications.
The open-loop payment system is certified by RuPay, the national smart card based payment standard in India.
Now, Cardtek has become a new vendor providing RuPay Level 2 Kernel certification in India.
Cardtek executive chairwoman Ayse Nil Sarigollu said: “India is known for its innovation and advanced technology and this project will now allow residents to make all their public transactions easily, quickly, and safely via a single card or account.”
