The company plans to expand the capability to all US Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026. It expects the rollout to reach fuel stations by mid-2027.

Walmart said the move is intended to give customers and members more choice at checkout. It described the update as part of its effort to make shopping “simpler and more seamless from start to finish.”

Tap to Pay will allow contactless payments at the point of sale using eligible cards and digital wallets. Customers and members will be able to pay using “eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch,” the statement added.

Walmart further said that customers and members will be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets.

A company spokesperson told Axios that the introduction will support both Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The retailer said Tap to Pay will sit alongside existing payment methods, including cash, credit cards and Walmart Pay.

Walmart Pay enables customers to pay via the Walmart app, view purchases and receipts, and access Walmart+ fuel savings.

At Sam’s Club, members can also use Scan & Go to scan items and pay as they shop. The company said the feature is designed to let members skip the traditional checkout line.
